As a Together member you can join in many of the education programmes offered in your area by the Council of Trade Unions (CTU) or by the unions affiliated to the CTU. Some of these are very short courses based around a campaign and some are part of longer training courses that may contribute to an NZQA qualification. All of them are provided at no cost to Together members.
Here's a selection of the courses available now:
- Health and Safety Representative Training
- Learning Representatives Programme
- The Working Women's Resource Centre
1. Health and Safety Representative Training
New Zealand Council of Trade Unions Te Kauae Kaimahi is the leading provider of Health and Safety Representative training. The CTU has been delivering health and safety representative training since 2003, and is currently the largest provider of this training in New Zealand. It has developed Health and Safety Representative course materials for stages 1, 2 and 3.
These courses have been approved under parts 19G (1) and 46A of the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992. Their reach extends to employers and workers across New Zealand and in a wide range of industries. Training is offered in both metropolitan and provincial centres.
For more information please contact Monica O'Connell on 04 385 1334, ext. 825, or monicao@nzctu.org.nz
2. Learning Representatives Programme
The Learning Representatives Programme is part of a range of initiatives to increase the participation of working people in learning at work.
Learning Reps are elected by workers to play a leadership role in encouraging workplace learning. They are trained in the skills that are needed for the role: to provide information on what learning is available, to make learning a group activity, to help co-workers identify their learning needs, and to work with the employer on finding solutions.
For more information please contact Mary McTavish on 04 385 1334, ext 824, or marym@nzctu.org.nz
3. The Working Women's Resource Centre - Auckland
From time to time, the Working Women's Resource Centre offers seminars aimed at improving the situation of working women. These include seminars on Flexible Working Arrangements, Supporting Workers with Mental Illness, and Valuing Experience, as well as community law sessions focusing on women's legal issues.
