NZ’s largest hotel operator, Accor, has just announced it will pay all its workers a Living Wage. At the same time, in more than 80 managed isolation facilities across the country, hotel workers are keeping us all safe from COVID as our friends and family make their way home from overseas.
And yet, its often low-wage – if not minimum wage – work. We congratulate Accor for making the decision to move their workers to a Living Wage. But we think all MIQ workers are worth more.
We the undersigned:
Believe that all the workers in NZ’s Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ) facilities are doing a great job keeping us all safe from Covid-19. They are brave, hardworking and we appreciate them for it. While most MIQ workers earn above the Living Wage, some do not.
The government, through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, effectively controls the MIQ facilities and has the power to insist that all businesses involved in the facilities pay all their workers the Living Wage.
The government must make the Living Wage a reality for all MIQ workers.
