What
A community march to honour Kate Sheppard’s fight for Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value and to continue the call for pay equity today. The day will include a cyclists’ ride-in, karakia, kai, children’s activities, a march through the city, speakers, cultural performances, healthcare checks, and solidarity actions.
Who
- Open to everyone – whānau, friends, community groups, and supporters of women’s rights.
- Cyclists led by Stacey Bruce.
- Karakia and waiata led by Tangata Whenua.
- Speakers representing diverse cultures, ages, and professions.
- Performances from local choirs and cultural groups.
Where
- Cyclists meet: University of Canterbury, Arts Road car park (next to Kate Sheppard House) → ride to Victoria Square.
- Main gathering: Victoria Square (kai, face painting, health checks, parking nearby).
- March route: Victoria Square → Armagh St → Manchester St → Worcester St → Cathedral Square (past the Suffrage Memorial) → finish at the Bridge of Remembrance.
- Closing: Bridge of Remembrance (seating, water, and accessibility support available).
When
- 10:00 AM – Cyclists meet at University of Canterbury.
- 10:00 AM – Karakia at Victoria Square, followed by kai (BBQ) and activities.
- 11:00 AM – March to Bridge of Remembrance begins.
- 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM – Speakers & performances at the Bridge.
- 12:30 PM – Event concludes.
- 1:00 PM – Optional: Join the March for Palestine (same location) to show solidarity with women and children globally.
