Our ferries - Our future

Finance Minister Nicola Willis wants to replace rail-enabled publicly owned interisland ferries with ones that don’t carry rail freight and are owned and operated with some kind of privatisation.
We urgently need to tell her and her government’s coalition partners that the only option we will accept are publicly owned ferries that are rail-enabled.
They are our ferries. This is our future.

Our ferries - Our future
To the Shareholding Minister of KiwiRail Nicola Willis:
The Interislander ferries are part of who we are as New Zealanders and critical infrastructure for our national transport system.
It is vital to our freight system and to our economy that the new ferries you and your government plan to purchase are kept in public ownership and are built to carry rail.
Keeping the ownership and operation of our largest ferry service in public hands will ensure the connection between our main islands. Making sure that new ferries can continue to carry roll-on roll-off rail will ensure that we can keep rail as a low emission, low cost freight option into the future.
This is a decision that will last a generation. Make sure you get it right. Choose publicly owned, rail-enabled ferries.
Our Ferries. Our Future.
