Woolworths strike fund

Support your essential supermarket workers in their call for fair pay and safe working conditions.

Woolworths workers are asking one of New Zealand’s largest and most profitable businesses to commit to a living wage, safe staffing, and penalty rates. In a recent union survey 90% of supermarket workers said that their store is understaffed, and more than 60% said that their wages are not sufficient to cover their regular living expenses.

Woolworths, an Australian retail group, have extracted more than $1 billion in dividends for shareholders in the last five years. Meanwhile, most kiwi Woolworths workers simply can’t afford to miss hours or days of work:

“We simply don’t get paid enough to put aside any money for a rainy day - many of us live week to week … It’s a really tough job. We deal with daily abuse in stores that are constantly understaffed, and we need Woolworths to listen carefully and understand why we’ve voted for these initial strike actions.”

Michelle McKenzie, Woolworths Duty Supervisor.
