    Defend fair pay agreements!

When workers’ rights are under attack – stand up fight back.

Start talking about preparing a general strike, so workers are ready to go when the government starts attacking us. There is plenty of time to prepare, get moving! While Luxon/Seymour/Peters are still negotiating.

We cannot return to the years of non represented workers not benefitting from hard won awards and with their employers getting away with underpaying their workers.

This ought to greatly assist lower paid employees in NZ and bring us onto line with other significant countries

Fair Pay Agreements matter to me enormously, even as a salaried worker in an industry which won’t be affected.

This is because I know that the work conditions and fair pay for all workers is essential for keeping the society I am part of fair and to allow people to live and work in dignity. For too long there has been a race to the bottom in industries which are essentials to keeping our economy and society running, and the ultimate losers are the people who do that work. This is unjust, and leads to inequality which hurts all of us.

Fair Pay Agreements are the first chance to restore the rights and real wages which have been eroded over the last 30+ years. Without them, we will continue to see families struggle to put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. That is not the kind of society I want to live in.

I’m retired and until 1991 worked with our union award agreements covering all industries and enabling us to fight for better wages and conditions and for a better society. Generations of working class new Zealanders have fought for the right to represent our interests through our unions. My grandchildren no longer have these rights. Fair Pay Agreements are a step towards reinstating our lost rights. All attempts by monopoly employers and their extremist political parties to end Fair Pay Agreementss must be resisted and defeated.

I support Fair pay agreements as they can set fair wage recognition of the skills and experience of a particular role, and provide a minimum rate which is supportive of pay transparency

I have worked long & hard as a Support Worker in the health & Disability sector. However, the work I do continues to be ‘under valued’ & therefore does not keep up with inflation &/or the current cost of living crisis in Aotearoa. This further undermines the ‘Quality of essential Services’ as many experienced workers leave the industry to be paid better elsewhere. The whole industry suffers as these highly skilled & experienced workers leave. All Support Workers & Caregivers NEED to be paid better to afford to have a ‘fair & reasonable standard of living’ in Aotearoa. We NEED our work to be ‘Valued’ by way of ‘Fair Pay Agreements’ in Aotearoa.

Fair Pay agreements are very important for the employment sector I work in – commercial cleaning. My workmates and I are employed at a school, and are fortunate to be employed by the school (board) and MOE. We are fortunate to be covered by contract that is negotiated and reviewed regularly. Presently we are paid the Living Wage which was a major victory in our newest contract negotiation.

Other cleaners that work for contractors are mostly paid on or just above the minimum wage. They work unchanging shifts usually at nights and weekends, receive little or no training, and are forced to travel across a town/city/region with no travel allowance in their contract.

A Fair Pay agreement would put all cleaners on a level playing field, meaning better training, support and pay. I will strenuously campaign against any government that tries to repeal Fair Pay agreements, especially if it is lead by a rich white man who has no understanding of how demanding (and often demeaning) commercial cleaning is.

Equal Pay act in 1977 didn’t get women fair pay still today in 2023 we are waiting. Creating a living wage would mean didn’t get all fair pay. Te Whatu Ora Nurses finally after 6 years have achieved pay equity but that doesn’t cover all nurses yet. It seems the only way to have fair pay is to legislate it. Do you think people deserve fair pay? What does it say if you think paying fair wages is to much? "If you can’t afford to pay fair wages then you can’t afford to be in business:.

Having worked in both hospitality and mail delivery in my younger years, having been chronically underpaid, and having been a representative of a union, which, at the time had zero bargaining power because of the conservative government’s stripping of union rights, I recognize the value of fair pay agreements. Businesses, and especially those in the lower paid sectors, are not necessarily created and maintained in order to make sure workers can afford basic things like a roof over their head, food, and medicine, and transport. They are created for the sole purpose of profit, and are often more than willing to obtain that at the cost of human suffering, including that of their own employees if necessary, and often do so in the name of remaining competitive in the market, which also holds up making a profit over providing the basic necessities of human existence in addition to a fair profit margin for workers. Fair pay agreements are able to put right those wrongs, and put the onus on industry as a whole to not only make a profit, but to make sure they’re paying their employees enough to live a decent life in the process. To remove fair pay would give license to Industry once again to make the lives of workers miserable in the name of profit. Do the right thing and keep fair pay.

    I am retired.

The very idea that the incoming, unstable govt would want to create more inequity in NZ is staggering.

Obviously Luxon, Seymour and probably Peters will do their best to couch this in terms of supporting business – while actually supporting the very wealthy individuals who are their mates.

V hopeful that Labour, the Greens and Te Party Maori are a very strong voice against this. And support unionism. Best wishes

Security guard on minimum wage . We were forced to moved to Australia after covid because wages didn’t keep up with inflation and everything were going up and still is . Please bring the weekend rates like Australia sat time and a half and Sunday double time this will help with cost of living and will match Australia it will also stop mass migration to Australia from nz

Currently working in retail with The Warehouse and with the rising cost of Living we seriously need to have wages which can help us provide for our families without putting a financial strain on us. We are currently being paid under the Living Wage which is barely enough to do a decent grocery shopping, pay bills and have anything spare to take my grandchildren out for some quality family time. Please help us not have to spend our time working to make ends meet and less time for my family…..

Fair pay agreements for me are about equity for someone’s labour in the job market and creating a level playing field with collective agreements that benefit workers.
